HomeMy WebLinkAboutRe_ Data CenterThanks for the insight. I watched a good amount of public comments from last night's council meeting at Monterey Park, where they had over 50 speakers opposing data centers. From
what I gathered, it seems that the concerns are pretty "standard", if that's the right word. The concerns generally fall into either environmental or economic categories.
Some residents were concerned that Edison would somehow pass on the "cost" to them because Edison would have to build a dedicated substation just for the data center. Others remarked
that the data center would generate a constant, low humming noise. Some are also concerned about potential water/air pollution, etc.
From what I gathered, unless the city is generating significant revenue, it doesn't seem to benefit the community at all. Unless I am missing something.

Hi Andrew,
Interestingly I was just talking with the Monterey Park CM yesterday about this topic. They do require a lot of power. Cooling seems to be evolving and they have closed loop systems
that help reduce water consumption. Both of these utility demands are obviously handled by other agencies. What was shared, it does not have any battery storage which seems to be
the real lighting rod for the public. It looks like an office building, and does not generate any traffic and therefore really is a low impact use. My understanding is that Monterey
Park has a utility tax and is expected to generate substantial revenue from an economic development standpoint. I will defer to Greg if he has any inquiries or what the appropriate
zoning classifications may be.

In watching council meetings around us (City of Industry, Monterey Park, etc), it looks like the latest interest du jour is the building of data centers, and their potential impacts
on a city.
Have we had anyone express interest in Diamond Bar? What are our feelings about data centers? Do our zoning even allow them?
