Dear Mayor Tye, Mayor Pro Tem Low, Honorable Council Members,
I am a resident of Diamond Bar, and I am writing to urge you to take proactive steps to ban data centers in our city.
Several cities in the San Gabriel Valley have recently received applications from data center developers. In Monterey Park, residents discovered an application already two years in progress
and faced an uphill battle to convince their council to reject it, an outcome they achieved through a big effort. Other SGV cities - Montebello and El Monte, in particular - have responded
proactively by passing 45-day moratoriums while they gather more information. I urge you to go further and ban data centers outright by ordinance. They have no place in residential
communities like ours.
Data center development in any SGV city sets a harmful precedent for the entire region. While there may not be active applications in our city today, the City of Industry has at least
one - and, as public records reveal, is in discussions regarding additional proposals. The proposed site at Madrid Middle School poses a direct threat to both their community and ours.
Beyond banning data centers locally, I encourage you to take one further step: join a growing regional effort by writing a letter of concern to the City of Industry and committing, alongside
neighboring cities, to keeping data centers out of our communities.
