Enforcement of New Crosswalk Law In Effect Drivers are reminded that parking or stopping their vehicles too close to a crosswalk or intersection is prohibited under a new state law. Known as the Daylighting Law, Assembly Bill 413 took effect at the start of 2024 but citation enforcement did not begin until January 1. AB 413 aims to eliminate blind spots at crossing points that make it difficult for drivers and pedestrians to see each other, increasing the likelihood of serious accidents. Specifically, the law makes it illegal to park or stop a vehicle within 20 feet of a marked or unmarked crosswalk, even if the curb is not painted red and there is no parking restriction sign. For reference, a full-size SUV is approximately 17 feet in length. Violations of AB 413, whether or not the driver is present, are considered a parking violation, and therefore are not recorded on driving records. However, unpaid parking tickets can have other negative consequences that include being assessed late fees, having the citation sent to a collection agency and reported to Special EventsSpecial Events Breakfast with the Bunny Saturday, April 12 | 9-11 a.m. Diamond Bar Center | 1600 Grand Ave AC 1801 Enjoy Breakfast with the Bunny for $15 per individual. Two Environmental Contests Now Open for Entries Water District Water District Hosting Hosting Fire-Resistant Fire-Resistant Landscaping Landscaping WorkshopWorkshop Los Angeles County Fire Department has started mailing out notices to all parcel/property owners throughout the county identified as being in a fire hazard severity zone. These zones, or geographic areas, are identified by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) and given a moderate, high, or very high fire hazard classification based on factors such as vegetation, terrain, weather patterns, and fire history. In Diamond Bar, there are more than 3,500 parcels/properties located within a fire hazard severity zone, and therefore subject to state-mandated defensible space requirements. Defensible space is the buffer that extends outward from a home or structure for a distance of up to 100 feet or the property line. Within this space, vegetation and other combustible materials should be cleared, thinned, or replaced with plants and things that are less likely to catch fire, have a lower fire intensity, and resist the spread of fire. These measures increase a home’s chance of surviving a wildfire and provide safer conditions for firefighting efforts. The Annual Defensible Space notice mailed out by the Fire Department outlines the necessary steps to create the required defensible space, and gives individuals until the end of April to complete the work and avoid receiving a non-compliance letter in May. To learn more about Fire Hazard Severity Zones and look up your property’s fire hazard designation, visit the Office of the State Fire Marshal’s website at https://osfm.fire.ca.gov/. Information about the Fire Department’s defensible space notice and requirements is available online at https://fire.lacounty.gov or by calling its Defensible Space Unit at 626-969-2375.
