Wear and tear from repeated use increases the amount released. In one study, researchers found that cutting carrots on plastic boards released thousands of microplastic particles per use, which could accumulate over time. Microplastics have been detected in human tissues, raising concerns among scientists about potential health effects. To reduce exposure, experts recommend switching to non-plastic cutting boards made of wood, bamboo, glass or marble. Other steps include limiting the use of plastic kitchen tools, heating food in glass containers instead of plastic, filtering drinking water, and regularly cleaning kitchen surfaces to reduce plastic dust.
