Key Differences Organics (Food Waste) Handling •No plastic bags —not even “biodegradable” or “compostable” types •Use paper bags or thin cardboard boxes for food waste Why this matters: Plastic contaminates the composting process. It breaks down into microplastics and chemical residues that can end up in compost and mulch —eventually entering the soil and food supply. Key Differences Source Separation of Recyclables and Trash •WM requires recyclables and trash to be sorted at the source •With VVS, these were commingled and sorted later Why this matters: Clean, separated recyclables stay uncontaminated and are easier to process into new materials. State Law SB 1383 –Organics Recycling 1.Everyone must recycle green waste (yard + food scraps) 2.Certain businesses must donate edible food 3.Color-coded bins: •Green = Organics •Blue = Recyclables •Black/Grey = Trash Why: Reduce methane emissions by keeping organics out of the landfill. Color-coded bins make sorting consistent and reduce confusion. State Laws SB 54 –Plastic Pollution Reduction •Polystyrene (Styrofoam) is banned statewide •More materials may be restricted as recyclability data is reviewed Why this matters: State is making efforts to streamline recycling and reduce confusion Sorting Guidelines Organics Recycling (Green Bin) •Recycle all food items •Remove all packaging, napkins are okay •Use paper bags or rinse containers regularly to prevent pests Sorting Guidelines Recycling (Blue Bin) •Keep items clean, empty, and dry •Don’t bag recyclables •Don’t include plastic wrap, film, pouches, cords, or clothing •Lids on When in doubt, throw it out.Wishful recycling causes contamination.
