Used Oil Filter Exchange in July
Did you know that used motor oil and filters contain harmful contaminants that when
improperly disposed of can harm human health and the environment? By recycling
these items, you prevent this pollution threat and conserve valuable resources and
energy.
If you change your vehicle’s oil at home, you can take advantage of a free used oil
filter exchange event taking place 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 13 at the
local AutoZone, located at 303 W. Diamond Bar Boulevard.
Each Diamond Bar household is eligible to receive two replacement oil filters with a
maximum cost of $15 each. While supplies last, you can also get a free used oil
recycling kit that includes an oil container and funnel.

Save Energy – Plant a Tree
Solar heat coming through windows and roofs can make your home hotter and
increase your cooling costs. One effective way to cool your home and save on your
energy bill is to plant trees in strategic locations, such as the south side of your home
where they will block summer heat while letting in winter sunlight. It is also important
to select the right type of tree; evergreen trees or shrubs provide year-round shade
and wind protection. Other tips to keep in mind, select native or climate-adapted tree
species to ensure they thrive, and plant them in areas where the branches and roots
will not interfere with your home’s solar panels or foundation.

Best Practices for Tree Care and Maintenance
Arbor Day may have come and gone, but nurturing and protecting our trees is a year-
long commitment. By dedicating just a few minutes each week to your property’s
trees, you contribute to a healthier ecosystem and extend the spirit of Arbor Day
throughout the year.
Top Tree Caring Tips
• Check your trees frequently for any signs of disease or pests. Watch for
symptoms like unusual bark discolorations, holes, wilting leaves, or fungal
growth.
• Avoid overwatering and ensure water does not stagnate around the tree’s
base, as this can increase disease susceptibility. Provide proper drainage and
water according to each tree's specific needs.
• Cut away dead or infected branches regularly to prevent disease spread.
Disinfect your pruning tools after each use to avoid transferring pathogens.
• Place a layer of mulch around the base of your trees to help maintain
moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress harmful fungi.
• Use beneficial insects to combat harmful pests. For example, certain wasp
species can effectively manage the population of the Goldspotted Oak Borer, a
potential pest to Southern California trees.
7
Also, if you are considering planting a new tree, choose from species or varieties
known to resist common pests and diseases prevalent in your area.
Save Water- Check for Leaks
Leaks in and around your home are a common cause of water waste and high water
bills. Leaks should be repaired as soon as possible to prevent damage to your home
and avoid costly water bills. Checking for leaks is easy! Follow these two easy steps:
1. Make sure that all taps, appliances, and fixtures in your home are turned off.
2. Locate your water meter (it is usually located on the sidewalk near the street
outside your home) and look at the meter’s sweeping arrow. If it is moving
while all water is turned off, this indicates water flow, suggesting a possible
leak.
If you discover a leak or need more information, visit the Walnut Valley Water
District’s website: https://walnutvalleywater.gov/customer-service/meter-and-leak-
information/.
