Understanding California’s Recycling Laws
California has enacted several laws to promote environmental sustainability, each
influencing how businesses manage waste. These initiatives are crucial for diverting
waste from landfills, conserving resources, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
o AB 341 aims to increase recycling rates by requiring businesses, that generate
more than four cubic yards of commercial solid waste per week to arrange for
recycling services.
o AB 1826 mandates businesses generating two cubic yards or more of
commercial solid waste per week to arrange for organic waste recycling
services.
6
o SB 1383 focuses on reducing organic waste disposal by 75% by the year 2025
and recovering at least 20% of edible food currently discarded. All restaurants
must separate organic waste for recycling, and those who qualify must also
establish programs to donate excess edible food to food recovery
organizations. Visit the City’s website for more information on edible food
recovery.
o AB 827 mandates that businesses subject to AB 1826 and AB 341 provide
customers with accessible recycling and organics collection bins for materials
generated from on-site purchases. Establishments must ensure these bins are
easily accessible, clearly marked with signage on proper sorting, and properly
serviced to ensure materials are recycled.
These laws are essential for reducing landfill waste, lowering greenhouse gas
emissions, conserving natural resources, and addressing food insecurity. Complying
with them involves developing waste management plans, training staff, and
partnering with local food recovery and recycling services.
