Celebrate Mother's Day and Mother Earth
Sustainably
This Mother's Day, show love to Mom and the planet, too! Here are a few eco-friendly
ideas to make the day extra special:
o Gift Green: Choose potted plants or herbs over cut flowers for longer-lasting
beauty and pollinator support.
o Picnic with Purpose: Pack a zero-waste picnic using reusable items and local,
homemade treats.
o Time in Nature: Take a walk, hike, or visit a garden—create memories
outdoors.
o DIY Spa Day: Treat Mom with homemade scrubs and masks using natural
ingredients.
o Cook a Plant-Based Meal: Prepare a seasonal, vegetarian meal together.
o Skip the Waste: Use reusable décor, make homemade cards, and avoid
single-use plastics.
Let's celebrate all moms—and our Earth—with simple, sustainable choices.

Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month:
Sustainability Leaders to Know
This May, we honor Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) leaders making waves
in sustainability:
o Dr. Vandana Shiva: Environmental activist promoting seed saving and
sustainable agriculture in India.
o Kazuhiko Nishi: Tech pioneer advocating for renewable energy development
in Japan.
o Maya Lin: Artist and architect using creative media to raise awareness for
biodiversity loss.
o Mami Hara: Leading Seattle's green urban water systems and environmental
justice.
o Dr. Thomas Goreau: Marine biologist restoring coral reefs through innovative
"Biorock" technology.
Let's celebrate their impact and be inspired to act locally for a greener future.

Celebrate National Bike to Work Day: A Simple
Step Toward Sustainability
May 16 is National Bike to Work Day, ditch the car and bike instead. Biking helps cut
carbon emissions, reduces traffic, and boosts your health.
Tips for a smooth ride:
o Plan your route
o Pack water and a jacket
o Use lights, a helmet, and reflective gear
Let’s celebrate this day by hopping on our bikes, reducing our environmental impact,
and showing our support for a greener future—one pedal at a time.

Bad, Better, Best: The Climate Impact of Meat
Meat production creates primary emissions, but even small swaps make a difference:
o Bad: Beef and lamb - are the worst for the environment they produce
methane, and raising them uses a lot of resources. A single serving of beef can
have up to 60 times the emissions of other foods. Cheese also has a
surprisingly high carbon footprint
o Better: Pork – is better than beef and lamb, but still not great. It produces
about one-third the emissions of beef. If you cannot give up meat, pork is a
better option.
o Best: Chicken, turkey and eggs – have the lowest emissions of the common
meats. Choosing poultry over red meat can cut your carbon footprint in half.
Eggs are also a good, low-impact option. Fish varies a lot. Some farmed
seafood can be high in emissions, while wild-caught options tend to be better.
Do a little research at Seafood Watch to make smart choices.
Try eating less meat or choosing plant-based meals more often for a healthier planet.

Nine Ways to Cut Down on Microplastics
Microplastics—tiny plastic particles—are everywhere: in our food, water, air, and even
inside our bodies. While their health effects are still being studied, they have been
linked to serious concerns, like increased risk of heart attacks and long-term
pollution.
Luckily, there are small steps we can take every day to reduce our exposure:
1. Cook at home with fresh ingredients to avoid processed foods that come in
plastic.
2. Drink loose-leaf tea instead of tea bags, which often contain plastic.
3. Never microwave food in plastic—use glass or ceramic instead.
4. Store food in jars, glass, or metal containers instead of single-use plastic.
5. Request real mugs at cafés or bring your own reusable cup.
6. Avoid bottled drinks—they can contain hundreds of thousands of microplastic
particles.
7. Use wooden cutting boards, not plastic ones.
8. Vacuum and dust regularly to reduce plastic particles in your home.
9. Choose natural fabrics for clothing, curtains, and rugs.

Even small changes can make a big difference—for your health, our environment, and
future generations.
