Celebrate World Environment Day
World Environment Day is observed on June 5 to encourage global awareness and
action for the protection of the environment. This year’s theme, Restore, Renew,
Reimagine, calls for restoring damaged ecosystems, renewing sustainable habits,
and reimagining a healthier, more balanced relationship with nature.
Why It Matters:
The environment provides essential resources, including clean air, water, food, and
biodiversity. However, growing challenges such as pollution, deforestation, and
climate change threaten these resources. World Environment Day brings attention to
these issues and promotes efforts toward a more sustainable future.
How You Can Take Part:
o Restore- Participate in habitat cleanups, plant trees, or support restoration
projects.
o Renew- Reduce waste, use less water and energy, and adopt sustainable daily
habits.
o Reimagine- Advocate for green policies, support eco-friendly businesses, and
promote environmental education.

Even small actions make a difference when we work together for a cleaner, healthier
planet.
Sustainable Ways to Celebrate Father’s Day
Just like our dads, the Earth provides for us, protects us, and gives us the foundation
we need to thrive. This Father’s Day, show appreciation for both by celebrating in
ways that are thoughtful, fun, and sustainable.
Here are some simple ways to make this Father’s Day special for your dad and for the
planet:
o Outdoor Activities- Spend time together hiking, camping, or biking. Bring
reusable gear to reduce waste.
o Eco-Friendly Grilling- Use local and organic ingredients, and opt for reusable
items over single-use ones.
o Green Gifts- Choose sustainable items like reusable mugs, native plants, or a
tree planted in Dad’s name.
o DIY Projects- Create a compost bin, build a birdhouse, or start a garden
together.

Celebrating sustainably shows appreciation for the environment and creates
meaningful family memories.
Paper versus Plastic: Why Reusable Bags Are
Best
For many years, the choice between paper and plastic bags has raised environmental
concerns. While paper may appear more eco-friendly, both paper and plastic bags
have significant environmental impacts.
o Plastic bags are made from petroleum and can take hundreds of years to
break down, often turning into harmful microplastics that pollute land and
water.
o Paper bags break down more easily but require more energy, water, and
natural resources to produce and transport.
o Reusable bags offer the most sustainable option. Made from materials like
cloth or recycled plastic, they can be used repeatedly and significantly reduce
waste.
Adopting reusable bags is a simple change with a lasting positive impact. Keep them
handy at home, in your car, or at work so you’re always prepared to shop sustainably.

Summer Stormwater and Pet Waste
Stormwater pollution is not just a winter issue. In summer, activities like overwatering
lawns, washing cars in driveways, or broken sprinklers can cause runoff. This runoff
carries pollutants into storm drains, which flow directly to rivers, lakes, and beaches
without any treatment.
A common but often overlooked source of pollution is pet waste. When left on the
ground, it can be washed into storm drains, carrying harmful bacteria and parasites
such as E. Coli and Giardia. These pollutants pose risks to both people and wildlife.
The solution is simple- pick up pet waste, bag it, and place it in the trash. To reduce
plastic waste, consider using a pooper scooper and a reusable bag for regular
disposal.
Keeping your yard clean and using water wisely helps protect our local waterways all
year long.

Natural Pest Management for Healthier
Gardens
As warmer weather arrives, garden pests—like caterpillars and insects—can also
appear. While some pests are just bothersome, others may damage plants or spread
disease.
The good news is that you don’t need harmful chemicals to manage them. Here are
simple, low-toxicity ways to protect your garden:
o Attract Helpful Insects– Insects like ladybugs and lacewings eat common
pests. Plant flowers such as yarrow, dill, and cosmos to invite them.
o Support Wildlife– Birds, frogs, and lizards help control pests. Add birdbaths,
nesting boxes, or shrubs to welcome them.
o Use Companion Plants– Certain plants naturally deter pests. For example,
marigolds repel aphids, and basil keeps flies away.
o Keep Plants Strong– Healthy plants resist pests better. Water deeply, use
mulch, and rotate crops to maintain healthy soil.
o Remove Pests by Hand– Picking off insects or damaged leaves is an easy way
to prevent further spread.

helps your garden grow strong all season long.
