From Farm to Kitchen: The Environmental Impacts
of U.S. Food Waste
The EPA report, "From Farm to Kitchen: The Environmental Impacts of U.S. Food Waste,"
highlights the significant environmental consequences of food waste in the United States.
Over a third of the food produced in the U.S. is never consumed, leading to a waste of
resources and various environmental problems. Food waste is the most common material in
landfills and incinerators, making up a large percentage of municipal solid waste. The report
emphasizes that reducing food waste can improve food security, increase productivity and
economic efficiency, conserve resources and energy, and combat climate change.
The report focuses on the environmental footprint of the U.S. food supply chain, from
agricultural land and water use to the application of pesticides and fertilizers, energy
consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. By providing estimates of the environmental
impact of current food waste levels, the EPA aims to help policymakers, researchers, and the
public make informed decisions, prioritize environmental concerns, and develop effective
strategies to minimize food waste. The report also identifies areas where further research is
needed to better understand and address the environmental impact of food waste in the
U.S.
