Impact Report 3 How Food Waste Contributes to Climate Change & What You Can Do About It Food waste is a major contributor to climate change, responsible for 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions—more than the entire airline industry. When food decomposes in landfills, it releases methane, a greenhouse gas far more potent than carbon dioxide. Additionally, the production of food requires vast amounts of water, land, and energy, all of which are wasted when food is discarded. The environmental impact extends beyond emissions, as deforestation, biodiversity loss, and excessive water use are all linked to food production and waste. To combat food waste, individuals can adopt smarter consumption habits. Planning meals carefully and buying only necessary items can prevent excess food from going unused. Proper storage techniques help keep food fresh for longer, while understanding expiration labels can prevent premature disposal. Cooking creatively with leftovers also helps reduce waste. On a broader scale, supporting food rescue programs, making mindful shopping choices, and advocating for systemic changes in food distribution and waste management are crucial for a more sustainable future.
