Impact Report 3 California’s Food Recovery Program is the First of its Kind in the US California's new food recovery mandate is part of its efforts to reduce food waste and curb climate change. The legislation requires food businesses, such as grocery stores and restaurants, to donate surplus edible food to food banks or other recovery organizations, rather than discarding it. This initiative is aimed at addressing both hunger and environmental impacts by diverting food waste from landfills, where it would otherwise contribute to methane emissions. The law also emphasizes the need for infrastructure improvements and partnerships to support food donation and recovery. Local governments are tasked with setting up programs, ensuring compliance, and reporting outcomes, which presents a logistical challenge. However, the state hopes that this comprehensive approach will have significant social and environmental benefits.
