San Diego Zoo and Feeding San Diego Collaborate to Combat
Food Waste
The San Diego Zoo and Feeding San Diego are working collaboratively to combat food
waste through innovative programs. The organizations are working to repurpose unused
food into animal feed, compost, or donations to those in need. According to CalRecycle
Director Rachel Machi Wagoner, we need to significantly reduce the amount of organic
material that reaches the landfill, which equates to removing 3 million cars off California
highways.
Since its passage in 2016, California State Mandate SB1383 has been pushing to reduce
organic material by 75%. Part of the legislation involves food recovery for businesses that
meet a certain criterion to be required to donate their excess edible food. The mandate
aims to recover 20% of excess edible food that would have otherwise been sent to the
landfill.
The San Diego Zoo has been working with Feeding San Diego to donate its excess edible
food from special events and dining since 2017. In that time, the partnership has created
nearly 31,000 meals to serve people in need. Feeding San Diego partners with over 170
non-profit organizations that can use that food to feed people in the community. The
mandate allows the community to come together to serve those in need while helping to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Other like organizations such as Hotel Coronado and
Snapdragon Stadium are also donating.
