How Food Banks Prevented 1.8 Million Metric Tons of Carbon Emissions
Last Year
Food Banks have been key players in the fight against climate change by significantly
reducing food waste, which is a major source of carbon emissions. By rescuing excess
edible food from restaurants, grocery stores, and other sources, food banks prevent this
food from ending up in landfills where it would decompose and release methane, a harmful
greenhouse gas. This process not only mitigates the environmental impact of food waste, it
has a positive impact on the food insecure in our communities by providing them with
nutritious food that they need, further demonstrating how social and environmental goals
can align.
Food plays a crucial role in averting carbon emissions. Food banks across the United States
alone saved over 2.7 billion pounds of food from being wasted in 2020, preventing millions
of tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The integration of food waste prevention programs into
climate strategies underscores the importance of food banks in addressing both hunger
and environmental sustainability. Better yet, this model presents a scalable solution to food
insecurity and climate change by turning excess edible food into resources and reducing
the carbon footprint of food production and disposal.
