Email Us Email WM at cslosangeles@wm.com. home.wm.com/diamond-bar SB 1383 IS IN EFFECT What is SB 1383? The California State Legislature passed Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383), which requires cities to reduce organic waste disposal by 75% by 2025. Effective January 1, 2022, all California businesses, multifamily complexes, and single-family residences must sort food scraps and yard debris from trash and recycle them in an organics cart. For more information, visit the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) website at www.calrecycle.ca.gov/organics/slcp/. What do I need to do? Effective July 1, 2022, all food waste, food-soiled paper and yard trimmings must be placed in your green cart. Please note that plastic or compostable bags are not allowed in your organics cart as they decompose at a slower rate, increasing the risk of contamination. Optimal alternatives for containing organics include brown paper bags, cardboard boxes, and newspaper. Will my cart change? Part of SB 1383 requires waste carts to be uniformly colored across the state. These new carts will have dark grey bodies with black lids for trash, blue lids for recycling, and green lids for organics. If your carts do not currently follow this color scheme, they will likely be replaced with a compliant cart when they break and/or need repair. All carts ordered after January 2022 will meet the new color requirements. The state regulations require that all carts be color-compliant by January 2036. WM Smart Truck® Technology WM will launch an educational campaign to introduce WM Smart Truck® technology. Information will be sent to your household to help you recycle right and prevent overfill in your waste carts. If WM Smart Truck® Technology detects contamination or overfilling, the following will take place: • The contaminated/overfilled cart will be serviced. • A letter will be mailed to the service address informing you about the contamination spotted in your recycling or organics cart or if a trash, recycling, or organics cart is overfilled. The letter will also contain a photo of the contaminated or overfilled cart. Bread, Pasta, Rice, Grains, Coffee Grounds Meat, Fish & Poultry home.wm.com/diamond-bar Safety Tips Cool Your Coals! Just as those coals helped to get your campfire or backyard BBQ going, they can quickly start a fire in your trash cart, the back of a collection truck or at a waste facility. Properly dispose of your hot coals and ashes: • Cool your coals - hot coals and fresh ashes stay hot for several days. Let them cool for more than 48 hours before disposal. • Place your hot coals and ashes in a metal container and cover them with water to fully extinguish them. • Do not place coals and ashes in a plastic, paper, wood or galvanized container. • Do not place other combustibles in the container with the coals or ashes. Prevent Trash Fires in Your Community Did you know? The most common causes of trash fires are hot coals, ashes, and flammable items, such as batteries and household chemicals. You can help keep your family, community and collection workers safe and prevent trash fires by properly disposing of coals and household hazardous waste. Safety Tips Keep a Safe Distance: Collection trucks stop and back up frequently. Stay Clear: Keep your children clear of carts and our vehicles/trucks. Let the collection team in your neighborhood load trash or recycling into the truck.
