organic waste disposal by 75% and to recover
at least 20% of the edible food that is currently
discarded for human consumption.

Under SB 1383, commercial businesses that
generate, produce, ship, or serve food are
required to implement a food rescue program
by partnering with food banks, shelters, or soup
kitchens. This proactive approach not only
helps reduce edible food waste in landfills but
also supports local communities by addressing
food insecurity. Many of these community
organizations rely on donations to provide
meals for individuals and families in need. By
establishing a streamlined process for regular
donations, businesses can ensure edible
surplus food is redistributed to those in need.

Food Rescue Programs
Ensure compliance with SB 1383 by placing
food waste in the organic waste cart instead of
the regular trash. When disposing of food
waste, use a clear plastic bag to keep food
separate from green waste and to help with
odor and pest concerns. Dont forget to tie the
bag to prevent spillage. For more information
