HomeMy WebLinkAboutVVS-Mandatory Commercial Organics RecyclingAB1826• Assembly Bill (AB) 1826 requires that all businesses that generate certain amounts of regular and/or organic waste to implement mandatory recycling that will cover 100% of the organic waste stream created by that business.• Organic waste, as defined by CalRecycle, is food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, non-hazardous wood waste, and food-soiled paper waste that is mixed in with food waste.
Do You Qualify? - Mandated Timeline• April 1, 2016: Businesses that generate eight (8) cubic yards or more of organic waste per week must implement an organic recycling program.• January 1, 2017: Businesses that generate four (4) cubic yards or more of organic waste per week must implement an organic recycling program.• January 1, 2019: Businesses that generate four (4) cubic yards of trash per week must implement an organic recycling program.
Why Organics?• More than 30% of current material disposed in landfills is compostable/digestible.• Organic waste in landfills has been identified as a significant source of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions, which is mandated for reduction by the State of California.• Organic materials are recyclable through composting, mulching and alternative technologies such as anaerobic digestion, which produces renewable energy.
Opportunities for Recycling:Mandated businesses must take on one or more of the followingrecycling activities to achieve 100% organic waste diversion:A. Source Separate Recycling (Separate trash and recyclables from organics on-site): Source separated organic waste will be collected by Valley Vista Services for off-site processing, recycling and composting.B. Donate organics to a local food bank or food rescue organization.

AB1826 requires that all businesses that generate certain amounts of organic waste must implement a
recycling program that covers 100% of the organic waste generated by that business. You must choose between
one or all three options below (A, or B) for the collection of organic waste materials generated on site. Organic
waste includes food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, non-hazardous wood waste, and food-
soiled paper waste that is mixed in with food waste.
