America Recycles Day
Each year, the City celebrates America Recycles Day, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 at South Coast Air Quality Management District, located at 21865 Copley Drive, by offering
convenient drive-through recycling services for residents. This year’s event will feature paper shredding, electronic waste collection, and textile recycling.
Paper Shredding
Did you know shredded paper placed in your curbside recycling bin typically cannot be recycled? Once paper is shredded, its fibers become too short to be processed by most recycling
facilities, and the small pieces often fall through sorting equipment or get contaminated by other materials.
However, when shredded paper is collected in bulk through dedicated events like this one, it can be properly handled and recycled into new paper products. Each household may bring up
to two banker boxes (or two 20-gallon bags) of paper for shredding.
Please note: service will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the truck reaches capacity, shredding will be discontinued.
Electronic Waste (E-Waste)
E-waste collection is one of our most popular services — and a great opportunity to safely and responsibly dispose of your old electronics. Bring in items such as Televisions, computers,
monitors, printers, and small household electronics.
By using this event, you can save your two free Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) or four free bulky item pickups through your hauler for another time.
For year-round options, Goodwill located at 21070 Golden Springs Drive, accepts many types of electronic waste; simply drop off your items at your local donation center during normal
business hours.
Textile Recycling
If your clothing, shoes, or linens are still usable, please consider donating or giving them away to friends, family, or a local charity. This event is intended only for unusable or
non-donatable textiles, such as worn-out clothing, torn fabric, or heavily stained items.
City staff will kindly turn away items that are still in good condition and encourage residents to donate them instead.

Cut Down on Food Waste This Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, family, and of course, a delicious feast. Nonetheless every year, millions of pounds of food go to waste during this holiday. While we love the
idea of a table overflowing with turkey, stuffing, and pie, over-preparing often leads to throwing away leftovers. This year, you can make a difference by planning and reducing food
waste using the Guestimator tool from Save the Food <https://smex-ctp.trendmicro.com:443/wis/clicktime/v1/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fsavethefood.com%2fguestimator&umid=a389a710-914f-4a86-a86d-04171d393

The Guestimator is an online tool designed to help calculate exactly how much food is needed to prepare based on your guest list.
It takes into account the following:
* Number of Guests: You can specify the number of adults and children.
* Leftover Preferences: If you want leftovers for the next day or enough for a week, you can adjust the tool accordingly.
* Menu Items: Add classic dishes like turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and desserts, and it will provide portion recommendations.
This intuitive tool removes the guesswork from holiday planning, ensuring the right amount of food.
Tips for Reducing Food Waste Beyond the Guestimator
While the Guestimator is a great start, here are additional tips to make your Thanksgiving waste-free:
* Plan Your Menu Thoughtfully: Focus on dishes your guests love rather than trying to make different dishes.
* Repurpose Leftovers: Use leftover turkey for soups, sandwiches, or casseroles. Mashed potatoes can become pancakes, and cranberry sauce works well in baked goods.
* Encourage Guests to Take Leftovers: Have containers ready so guests can bring home extra food.
* Compost Scraps: If you have vegetable peels or other scraps, compost them instead of throwing them away.
Preparing just the right amount means less stress in the kitchen and more time to spend with loved ones. Plus, you will save money by buying only what you need.

Make This Black Friday a Sustainable One
Black Friday has become synonymous with big sales and even bigger crowds, but it can also come with significant environmental costs, from excessive waste to high carbon emissions from
shipping. This year, let us reimagine Black Friday and turn it into an opportunity to shop consciously, reduce waste, and support eco-friendly businesses.
These are some ways to enjoy the thrill of Black Friday deals while keeping sustainability in mind:
* Shop Local and Support Small Businesses:
Skip the major retailers and support local businesses this holiday season! From Nov. 28 through Dec. 31, shop at participating Diamond Bar retailers and restaurants, and earn 10% rewards
back on eligible purchases – up to $25 per transaction. Visit Diamond Bar’s Shop Local website <https://www.diamondbarca.gov/1155/Shop-Diamond-Bar> to learn how to upload receipts,
tract rewards, and find participating businesses.
* Choose Experiences Over Things:
Instead of material goods, consider giving the gift of experiences this Black Friday. Movie tickets, cooking classes, or a day pass to a local attraction are thoughtful gifts that do
not come with waste or packaging. Experiences create lasting memories and often have a smaller environmental impact.
* Skip Black Friday Altogether and Opt for a “Green Friday”:
Some people choose to skip shopping on Black Friday altogether and use the day to enjoy nature, spend time with family, or support environmental causes. If you are not in need of anything,
consider taking part in “Green Friday” by opting out of consumerism and reducing your environmental impact.

Protecting Your Plumbing System This Holiday Season
With all the cooking that comes with hosting Thanksgiving or other festive gatherings, your plumbing system might face an unwanted guest: FOG (fats, oils, and grease). These common kitchen
byproducts can wreak havoc on your drains and sewer systems if not handled properly.
To keep your pipes safe this Thanksgiving and beyond, these essential tips prevent costly and messy clogs:
* Dispose of Grease and Turkey Drippings Properly: Fats, oils, and grease may seem harmless when liquid, but they solidify as they cool, choking your pipes and causing blockages.
* Collect Grease in a Container: Pour grease and drippings into an old jar or coffee can. Let it cool and solidify, then dispose of it in the trash. Large amounts of grease should not
go into the organics cart.
* Wipe Before Washing: Use paper towels to wipe greasy pans and plates before rinsing them in the sink. Greasy paper towels are okay to be placed in the organics cart.

How to Help Children Waste Less Food
Children are often known for being picky eaters, but food waste costs money and contributes to climate change.
These practical ways can help families reduce food waste:
* Plan menus together: Children eat what they help choose, whether that is wraps, pasta salad, or muffins.
* Let Children make their own lunches: Ownership builds both skills and motivation to eat what they prepare.
* Track what comes home: Keep tabs on uneaten school lunches to adjust portions or swap out disliked items.
* Talk about food waste: Children understand the environmental impact and can become powerful advocates for change.
* Connect Children to food sources: Farm visits, markets, or school gardens deepen respect for food and reduce waste.
Cutting waste is not about saving money—it is about teaching children respect for food, the effort behind it, and the planet itself.
