The initiative aims to raise awareness about the environmental impact of plastic pollution and inspire long-term habits that contribute to a healthier planet. The Problems with Single-Use Plastics The same properties that make plastics so useful, their durability and resistance to degradation, also make them nearly impossible for nature to break down completely. Our heavy reliance on these disposable items causes big problems for the environment, society, the economy, and our health. Simple Swaps for a Greener Life * Opt for Reusable Utensils: Bring your own reusable set or refuse utensils if you are taking food home. * Invest in a Reusable Water Bottle: Skip single-use plastic bottles and opt for a reusable one instead. * Use Reusable Shopping Bags: Bring your reusable bags to the store to reduce plastic waste. This ban stems from Senate Bill 54 (SB 54), which required polystyrene manufacturers to demonstrate that at least 25% of the material could be recycled by 2025. The industry failed to meet that target, triggering the ban. As a result, restaurants, food vendors, and other businesses are not permitted to distribute single-use polystyrene items, including takeout containers, plates, cups, and trays. Polystyrene poses significant environmental harm due to its lightweight, brittle composition and resistance to biodegradation. It easily fragments into smaller pieces, contributing to widespread litter in urban areas, waterways, and marine environments, complicating cleanup efforts and endangering wildlife. To support the transition, the state is encouraging businesses to adopt safer, more sustainable alternatives such as paper-based, compostable, or reusable packaging. Residents can do their part by reducing their use of single-use plastics. As part of their review, each resident receives a 30-minute consultation led by SGVCOG staff using a whole-house approach that examines all aspects of energy usage and efficiency. SGVCOG will provide a follow-up email with a personalized report detailing specific recommendations for energy savings, as well as applicable rebates, incentives, and savings programs. Appointments are required, and can be made online <https://smex-ctp.trendmicro.com:443/wis/clicktime/v1/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.sgvcog.org%2fesgv&umid=108e7be7-1fa5-4941-9467-d6d563570d3f&auth=8b dedd3d91077fc962cc14f56f1c3add77c99ae7-0c34d0bcba9d6233ed8c49dacb4dd604c992114f> or by calling 626-373-2688 or emailing esgv@sgvcog.org <mailto:esgv@sgvcog.org> . <https://www.diamondbarca.gov/Areas/CivicSend/Assets/Uploads/4600/7886a4f9750f4249808a18fc80744785_small_optimized.jpg> Save the Date * Used Oil Filter Exchange July 19, 2025 Autozone- 303 Diamond Bar Boulevard More Details <https://www.diamondbarca.gov/1173/Used-Oil-Filter-Exchange> * Paper Shredding and E-Waste Recycling Aug. 9, 2025 AQMD Parking Lot- 21865 Copley Drive More Details <https://www.diamondbarca.gov/1175/Paper-Shredding-and-E-Waste-Collection> * America Recycles Day Nov. 15, 2025 AQMD Parking Lot- 21865 Copley Drive More Details <https://www.diamondbarca.gov/1165/America-Recycles-Day> * Used Oil Filter Exchange Jan. 17, 2026, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. AutoZone – 303 S Diamond Bar Blvd. More Details <https://www.diamondbarca.gov/404/Used-Oil-Recycling> Contact Information <https://www.diamondbarca.gov/Areas/CivicSend/Assets/Uploads/4600/b0b10f74edff42818f3bb78a4121e511_small_optimized.jpg> City of Diamond Bar | Environmental Services 21810 Copley Drive, Diamond Bar, CA 91765 For information about this newsletter, contact the City Manager's Office at (909) 839-7015 or greendb@diamondbarca.gov <mailto:greendb@diamondbarca.gov> .
