Trees have even been shown to support our well-being. Taking good care of trees improves these benefits! Visit the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree Care Guide <https://www.arborday.org/trees/tips/> to learn about pruning, mulching, watering, and much more to ensure a healthy tree. <https://www.diamondbarca.gov/Areas/CivicSend/Assets/Uploads/4600/96d4b192ff0d4204918741a52639fb3f_small_optimized.jpg> Arbor Day Poster Contest Diamond Bar students are invited to showcase their creativity and celebrate the importance of trees by participating in the City’s 2024 Arbor Day Poster Contest. One-third of all food in the United States goes uneaten. Preventing food from going to waste is one of the easiest and most powerful actions to save money and lower your environmental impact. Planning, prepping, and storing food can help your household waste less food. Here are a few tips: * Making a list with weekly meals in mind can save you money and time. If you only buy what you expect to use, you will be more likely to eat it all. Download this handy shopping list <https://smex-ctp.trendmicro.com:443/wis/clicktime/v1/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fstopfoodwaste.org%2ftips%2fplan%2fshopping%2dtips&umid=8c4b50fe-6c31-4408-bfdb-5bd1c59a2b8c&auth=589d86035e46dfb775117ee b1d511b342cc6d6a5-67040d32a59f5b1a9dd14a50eda6e4ab91c6cdd5> from StopFoodWaste.org. * Produce that is past its prime, as well as odds and ends of ingredients and leftovers, may still be fine for cooking. Repurpose these ingredients in soups, casseroles, stir-fries, frittatas, sauces, baked goods, pancakes, or smoothies. Get inspired with ideas from Zero Waste Chef <https://zerowastechef.com/2018/05/02/15-creative-uses-food-scraps/> . * Learn the difference between “sell-by,” “use-by,” “best-by,” and expiration dates here <https://www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/food-safety-basics/food-product-dati ng> to avoid throwing out perfectly good food. Here are examples of commonly used phrases: * "Best if Used By/Before" date indicates when a product will be of best flavor or quality. It is not a purchase or safety date. * "Sell-By" date tells the store how long to display the product for sale. It is not a safety date. * “Use-By" date is the last date recommended for the use of the product while at peak quality. It is not a safety date except for when used on infant formula. * “Freeze-By” date indicates when a product should be frozen to maintain peak quality. It is not a purchase or safety date. <https://www.diamondbarca.gov/Areas/CivicSend/Assets/Uploads/4600/f0ba3df05e19451983d6c2b0db813d29_small_optimized.jpg> CRV Program Updates Consumers pay a California Redemption Value (CRV) fee when they purchase beverages and receive CRV refunds when they redeem containers at a recycling center or retailer. CRV-eligible beverages are packaged in aluminum, glass, plastic, and bi-metal. The CRV refunds are 5 cents for containers less than 24 ounces and 10 cents for containers 24 ounces or larger. As of January 1, this includes beverage containers that are boxes, bladders or pouches containing wine, distilled spirits, wine coolers, or distilled spirit coolers. The redemption value for these additions is 25 cents for boxes, bladders, or pouches containing wine, distilled spirits, wine coolers, or distilled spirit coolers. Local recycling centers that buy back empty CRV beverage containers include: * Renovate Recycling Center Inc, 21080 Golden Springs Drive * Armbar Recycling Inc, 2825 S Diamond Bar Blvd. * Grand Mobile, 22628 E Golden Springs Drive <https://www.diamondbarca.gov/Areas/CivicSend/Assets/Uploads/4600/c5ccfacae2a341eeaac62a75ac03cbfe_small_optimized.jpg> Contact Information <https://www.diamondbarca.gov/Areas/CivicSend/Assets/Uploads/4600/b0b10f74edff42818f3bb78a4121e511_small_optimized.jpg> City of Diamond Bar | Environmental Services 21810 Copley Drive, Diamond Bar, CA 91765 For information about this newsletter, contact the City's Environmental Services Division at (909) 839-7015 or greendb@diamondbarca.gov <mailto:greendb@diamondbarca.gov> .
