That age-old saying of “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” captures the order in which waste should be managed. Producing food takes a lot of water, energy, and money to find its way to your fridge. Food waste in the garbage creates a greenhouse gas called methane that is 10 times stronger than carbon dioxide. Instead, consider placing food waste into your green (organics) recycling bin so it can be composted, turned into a soil amendment, and applied to landscapes and minimize impact on the environment. Reducing contaminants in your organics cart is crucial. The food waste and yard debris that go into your carts get turned into compost that is then applied to landscapes, which also conserves water. While the facilities that handle the organic material have mechanisms that sort out contaminants, broken glass and small pieces of plastics can pass through and inadvertently be applied to landscape and green spaces. Keeping it clean starts with you! Acceptable items include: * small branches and plants * grass clippings and leaves * food waste (fruit, vegetables, bread, meat) * food-soiled paper Non-acceptable items include: * dirt, stone, concrete, rock * limbs larger than 3in. in diameter * plastic bags, plastic wrap, plastic utensils <https://www.diamondbarca.gov/Areas/CivicSend/Assets/Uploads/4600/9a22c6dc2bee4a238488e5859349da34_small_optimized.jpg> SMART Gardening Workshops An Introduction to Compost workshop will be offered on Saturday, April 20 at the AQMD parking lot located at 21865 Copley Drive.
