Suspicious? What does that mean? You might have heard the saying, “if you see something say something!” What does that mean exactly?
It does not matter if you have lived in the city for one month or forty years, you all have a part in keeping the wonderful city of Diamond Bar safe. The longer you live here, the more
of an expert you become. By just watching what goes on in your neighborhood makes you familiar with the routines of your neighbors. So, when you see something unusual for your neighborhood
it should draw your attention. Once your attention is drawn to the unfamiliar activity, it’s time to watch what happens next. If you believe the activity might be criminal in nature
you need to call the Diamond Bar Sheriff’s station and report the activity. You see it, and then you report it. Pretty simple.
I always get asked, “Do I call 911 or do I call the station telephone number?” If you believe a crime is going to be committed, if you see the crime occurring, or if the crime has just
occurred and the criminals have fled the location, you need to call 911. This will send you to the closest police agency in the area where you are reporting the activity. If you’re
in Diamond bar and call 911 from your cell phone, you will most likely go directly to the Diamond bar Sheriff’s station. If your call gets picked up by CHP or Pomona Police Department,
don’t worry. They will connect you immediately to the 911 operators at the Diamond Bar Sheriff’s department.
When calling from your cell phone, we have no way of knowing where you are at. Your call bounces off nearby cell phone tower and directs your call to us. So, the first thing you need
to be aware of is your location. If you’re out walking or driving, try to give the street you are currently on and a house number. If you don’t know your exact location, try to give
the closest cross streets. Count how many houses away from the cross streets and provide a description of the location of incident. If you’re calling from a landline, you address
will automatically pop up on the dispatcher computer and we will know where you are at. If your out of the area but happen to see something on a home security camera, don’t dial 911
but call the station directly. Make sure you store the Diamond Bar/Walnut Sheriff’s station telephone number (909-595-2264) in your phone for cases such as this.
When you believe something suspicious is going on and have called to report the incident, please stay in the area, and monitor the activity. Too many people call to report the activity
and leave. When people leave, we cannot get any additional updated information. You might be the difference of stopping or solving a crime just by monitoring until we arrive. Your
call may have started out as a suspicious car parked in the neighborhood. Suddenly, two people get out of the car and jump your neighbor’s fence and your able to get a clothing description
and provide the information to the dispatcher. Now we have a burglary in progress. The dispatcher will notify responding units who will be driving emergent code three response and
will update deputies of the description of the suspects. So, if they decide to flee, we have an idea of who we are looking for and take them into custody. All this because you took
the time to make a positive difference in your community.
I hope this information will help you be confident on identifying suspicious activity. Thank you for taking the positive steps and assisting the Sheriff’s department in making Diamond
Bar the safest city as possible.
