HomeMy WebLinkAboutRe_ Scout BSA Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge.msgCAUTION: This message originated outside of our City of Diamond Bar network. Dear Deputy Scheller, It has been a number of days since we've spoken. Last month's Camporee really preoccupied us, since our scoutmaster was chair for the event, and I served as the chief medical officer for the ~600 scouts that participated. But, back on track, I now have an idea of group size, with 12-15 scouts expressing interest in doing the emergency preparedness merit badge and likely more who would want to simply partake in the fun. Our scoutmasters (boy & girl troops) also indicated that if you want to "do it big," that we can also invite the neighboring troops as well. Again, I appreciate your willingness to help and your enthusiasm. Should we try to meet in person to discuss? I like beer. But I understand if you're on duty, we can settle for coffee. To Ms Clarke and Villasenor, and Mr. Scheller: I find your names under the Diamond Bar Public Safety listing, and thus am contacting you as one of the BSA merit badge counselors for "Emergency Preparedness" in our local district. Per BSA requirements, the scout needs to "Take part in an emergency service project, either a real one or a practice drill, with a Scouting unit or a community agency." Since my troop (777 in Diamond Bar) doesn't have any emergency services in place, and because DB has an Emergency Operation Center that: To prepare for emergencies, the City does the following: * Conducts frequent staff training * Holds tabletop exercises * Participates in the annual Countywide disaster drill * Identifies resources to be used in emergencies * Tests coordination efforts with external organizations * https://www.diamondbarca.gov/222/City-Emergency-Operation-Center <https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fwww.diamondbarca.gov%2f222%2fCity-Emergency-Operation-Center&c=E,1,_Ok3evDfZSm 2tdNlR4XDZFqGT1KHrylsM2YKQaThSA8NtM5neN5wwTvb5sQ60IOx3jT1Bqu0SSqwOhM20ACutNW8Prg7lKe9YiAa87EB4hN3-oQ,&typo=1> If one of you would please inform me of any upcoming "staff training" or "tabletop exercies," or when the "annual Countywide disaster drill" would be, it would greatly help. Alternatively, Troop 777 with 70+ scouts and adult volunteers, has the potential to mobilize significant man power to aid in local disaster relief or assistance. If there is any interest, I would like to explore the possibility of a disaster plan of action between our troop and the Diamond Bar Emergency Operation Center. This would become part of the requirements for the current T777 scouts earning their Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge, but more importantly, would also benefit our community as well. Please let me know if there is any interest, or if I should contact any alternative persons or departments instead. Thank you in advance, -Louis R.
