Greetings. The National Weather Service in Los Angeles / Oxnard will NOT be holding a fire weather conference call today, but we would like to update you on the significant winter storm
slated to move across Southwest California tonight through at least Sunday night bringing widespread rain, mountain snow, and gusty south to southwest winds.
Today through Monday:
*** FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR THE LAKE AND FISH BURN SCARS IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY FROM 3 AM TO 6 PM SUNDAY ***
*** SLIGHT CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS WITH BRIEF HEAVY DOWNPOURS AND SMALL HAIL POSSIBLE SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH EARLY MONDAY MORNING ***
*** HIGH WIND WARNINGS FOR THE MOUNTAINS/ANTELOPE VALLEY/INTERIOR SLO COUNTY THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING ***
*** WINTER STORM WARNINGS FOR THE MOUNTAINS FROM 4PM SUNDAY TO 6 PM MONDAY ***
Rain:
* High confidence in widespread rain/mountain snow
* Moderate confidence in amounts and intensities
* Light rainfall developing along warm front through this afternoon, especially northern areas
* Moderate to heavy rainfall expected for a 4 to 6 hour time period tonight into early Sunday morning
* Peak rainfall intensities:
* Coast/valleys: 0.25-0.50 inches per hour
* Foothills/mountains: 0.50-1.00 inches per hour
* Highest rates likely across S-SW facing slopes
* At least 50 percent chance of reaching USGS thresholds for Fish and Lake Burn scars, including sub-hourly thresholds
* Peak rainfall timing:
* San Luis Obispo County: 4 pm - Midnight Sunday
* Santa Barbara County: 8 pm - 3 am Sunday
* Ventura County: 11 pm - 6 am Sunday
* LA County: 2 am Sunday - 9 am Sunday
* Cold and unstable air mass will likely bring showers Sunday into Monday
* 20 percent chance of thunderstorms including beaches
* Potential for brief heavy downpours/small hail

* Coasts/valleys: 1-2 inches
* Foothills/mountains: 3-6 inches (locally up to 8 inches)

Snow:
* Snow levels above 7000 feet through tonight, falling to 4000-6000 feet by Sunday afternoon, potentially lowering to 3000-3500 feet late Sunday night-Monday
* Heavy snow totalling 8-16 inches possible above 7000 feet
* Light snow accumulations (up to 1-3 inches) possible across Interstate 5 near Grapevine
Wind:
* Damaging S-SW wind gusts of 60-70 mph in the mountains, Antelope Valley, and interior SLO County late this afternoon-tonight
* Strongest winds expected in LA County mountains/Antelope Valley foothills
* Widespread wind gusts of 35-55 mph across coasts/valleys
