Greetings.
The National Weather Service in Oxnard will be NOT leading a local fire weather coordination call today, but we wanted to give you an update on the thunderstorm and flash flooding threats.
TODAY THROUGH MONDAY: THUNDERSTORMS
Southeast flow aloft will bring a threat of monsoonal showers and thunderstorms.
*** FLASH FLOODING AND BURN AREA DEBRIS FLOWS POSSIBLE OVER LA/VENTURA MOUNTAINS, ANTELOPE VALLEY, AND SANTA CLARITA VALLEY THROUGH THIS EVENING ***
* Mountains and deserts/interior valleys (all 4 counties):
* 30-50% chance of showers/thunderstorms through this evening
* Highest chances over LA/Ventura County mountains, Antelope Valley
* Highest chances afternoon/evening hours
* On Monday, 20-30 percent chance of lingering showers/thunderstorms across interior
* Coastal and valley areas (all 4 counties):
* 15-30% chance of showers/thunderstorms through this evening
* Rainfall Details
* Amounts and rates will be highly variable.
* Potential for brief heavy downpours with isolated rates of 0.75-1.00 inches per hour this afternoon/evening
* Highest threat over San Gabriel mountains and Antelope Valley
* Still warm with increasing humidities
* Unusually muggy conditions, especially today
* High temperatures 85-97 common, warm overnight lows 65-75 common
* Minimum humidities generally above 25%,
* Wind: Weaker than usual south to west winds today.
* Potential for brief and localized downburst wind gusts 30-40 mph in Antelope Valley.
* Assessment:
* FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT for LA/VENTURA MOUNTAINS, ANTELOPE VALLEY, SANTA CLARITA VALLEY
* Available moisture is near record highs today, but instability is generally marginal.
* Heavy rain and flash flooding is a real threat if any storms form, but some uncertainty IN extent of storm formation.
* Highest instability and flooding threat over San Gabriel Mountains and Antelope Valley
* Debris flows possible near recent burn areas, primarily for the Bobcat, Lake, Ranch 2, and Dam burns in LA County.
* Slight chance of thunderstorms across local beaches this afternoon/evening
* Dry lightning threat is minimal to none, confined to the deserts and interior valleys.
TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY: HURRICANE SWELL
South to southeast swells from Hurricane Frank off of Baja will generate near high surf
* Surf of 3-6 feet with local sets to 7 feet over beaches with any south exposure.
* Strong and dangerous rip currents likely.
