A topic that does not get discussed very often. When it comes to being prepared, there is greater chance if you establish a positive attitude and mindset, you will survive whatever event you’re facing. Have you ever heard the saying, “if you fail to prepare you prepare to fail.” The concept of this saying is; if we do nothing to prepare for an event, when the event occurs, we are most likely going to fail. That’s why law enforcement must train constantly so we might succeed in a stressful situation. If you were to assess your current situation, when an emergency happens will you succeed because you have prepared or will you fail because the lack of preparation? What is your expectation if you are met with any adverse event? Do you leave it to others for help or are you going to be able to help yourself? How do we gain a mindset for preparedness? Practice! With practice brings confidence. With confidence you have a greater chance of overcoming the event. The only way to obtain mental confidence is to know what to do before you must do it. Before you get into the stressful survival situation be confidently practiced and prepared so when the event may occur there is no question that you are ready. Since we are in California, we most often discuss fires, floods, and earthquakes. Go over inventories of food, water and supplies to make sure they are not expired and usable if needed. What about unnatural disasters like car accidents, crime, or an attacker. Take a self-defense class to learn what to do if someone tried to physically harm you. Consider your fitness level, could you run if needed. Practice good self-awareness techniques to see any possible threat before the event occurs. Be aware of your surroundings! If you had to get out of your location, you can make that confident choice because you have already assessed the area and know where you need to go if you must. You don’t have to wait to be a victim if you see the trouble before it starts. There are a lot of different topics we could go into regarding the topic of mindset. What I want to you to think about you and your family. Have and practice your plans in case of an emergency. This will give you confidence that if or when an event might happen, you will be able to overcome and survive. Don’t leave for someone else what you can prepare today. Make 2023 the year of a positive confident mindset and preparedness.
