This core is already producing a lot of thunderstorms and strong cells over the Bay Area and is expected to hold together or intensify as it moves to the south. This system will also create significant wind speed and directional changes in time and space, which along with the instability, will result in an environment favorable for rotating (supercell) thunderstorms and severe weather through early Thursday. Key Points and Highlights: * There is a general risk of severe weather over southwest California through early Thursday, especially tonight. * The risk is highest over coastal areas of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles Counties. * Severe weather risk includes localized strong and damaging winds, dangerous cloud-to-ground-lightning, small hail, a remote chance of a small and brief (1-2 minutes) tornado or waterspout. * This pattern is very similar to the storm last week that produced 2 tornadoes (Carpinteria and Montebello). * While there is a risk of small tornadoes, the chance of a tornado hitting any one particular location is extremely small. * If severe weather occurs, people should seek shelter in indoors, in the most interior room, away from windows. * NWS Los Angeles will be actively monitoring each storm. * See attached graphics for more detail on timing and areas of concern, as well as a summary of the threat.
