There is nothing like getting out on the road and feeling the air rush through your hair as you travel down the road. To me, it’s very therapeutic as well. However, I don’t think people take enough time to educate themselves of the proper way to ride on the roadway. I hope this blog will help with making good decisions while you are riding your bicycle. First, make sure you have a properly fit bicycle. Make sure that you feel comfortable on the bicycle and it easy to control. When you come to a stop you should be able to easily rest your foot on the ground without being on your tippytoes. You don’t want to fall over when you come to a stop. Handlebar and seat height are an important safety measure that will help keep you safe while riding. I would recommend finding a local bike shop who can help fit you to your bike. Make sure to wear a properly fitted helmet, you don’t want to squash your melon. If you are the age of 18 or older, you don’t have to wear a helmet, but I would highly recommend one. If you’re under the age of 18, you must wear a helmet while riding on a public roadway. This also applies to any passenger riding in a restraining seat attached or towed by the bicycle. Even though a bicycle is not a motor vehicle most cities in California treats them as if they are. That means when riding on the roadway you must adhere to all traffic laws. It’s actually illegal to ride your bike on the sidewalk (Diamond Bar Municipal Code 10.20.050) which is also the same for most cities within Los Angeles County. Since we have all seen the trend of electric and gas bicycles, I want to take a minute to dive into the different classification of bicycles. I also want to help define when a bicycle becomes a moped and or a motorcycle. A bicycle is simply a device which a person may ride propelled by human power. Most bikes are propelled by human power but the electric bike trend has arrived. An electric bicycle is a bicycle equipped with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts. Three classes of electric bicycles have been established. Below is from the California Department of Vehicles handbook: * Class 1: A low speed pedal-assisted electric bicycle equipped with a motor which provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and ceases to provide assistance when a speed of 20 mph is reached. * Class 2: A low speed throttle-assisted electric bicycle equipped with a motor used exclusively to propel the bicycle and NOT capable of providing assistance when a speed of 20 mph is reached. * Class 3: A low speed pedal-assisted electric bicycle equipped with a speedometer, and a motor which provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and ceases to provide assistance when a speed of 28 mph is reached. The operator of a Class 3 electric bicycle: * Must be 16 years old or older. * Must wear a bicycle safety helmet. * Must not transport passengers. * May ride an electric bicycle in a bicycle lane if authorized by local authority or ordinance. Motorized Bicycles Or Moped A motorized bicycle or moped is a two or three-wheeled device, capable of no more than 30 miles per hour (mph) on level ground, and equipped with: * Fully operative pedals for human propulsion. * A motor producing less than four gross brake horsepower and an automatic transmission. * No pedals if powered solely by electrical energy (CVC §406(a)). * Motorized bicycles may ride in a bicycle lane if authorized by local authority or * ordinance. Motorcycles A motorcycle is a motor vehicle with a seat or saddle for the rider and is designed to travel on not more than three wheels and whose motor displaces more than 150 cubic centimeters. Let’s do a quick equipment check. Your bike must have a brake, it needs to be the right height to put your foot down, and handlebars cannot be higher than your shoulders. At night the bicycle must be equipped a head lamp, a rear facing red reflector, and white or yellow reflector on the wheels, front, and rear of the bicycle (California vehicle code 21201 a-d). Once that is checked off, we are ready to ride. Since the bicycle is to be used like a motor vehicle, let’s talk about the rules of the road. Riders must ride in the same direction as traffic and can ride in the roadway as long as they are riding with the flow of traffic. If they are moving slower than traffic, Per California Vehicle Code 21202, individuals who ride must ride the bike as close as possible to the right side of the street. Allowable exceptions are when making a left turn, passing another when roads narrow, or construction zones. Make sure to know the proper hand signals for left, right, and stopping. This will indicate to other driver’s your intention to make a turning movement prior to making the turn. If you’re making a lane change or positioning yourself in the lane to make a left turn, make sure to look over your shoulder to determine if the lane is clear. Use your hand signal to indicate your turning movement. If clear, proceed with your movement always yielding to other vehicles on the roadway. Obey all signs and signals. This includes all roadway signs applicable to vehicular traffic. You must obey stop signs and red signal lights and cannot cross through an intersection with a yellow signal. Yes, you can get a citation for riding above the speed limit as well. A crosswalk is designated for foot traffic and not bicycles. Do not ride your bike in a marked crosswalk. If you want to cross in a cross walk, you will have to get off your bike and walk it as a pedestrian. Try to use bicycle lanes when ever available. Diamond Bar has many well painted bicycle lanes throughout the city. Bicycle lanes in Diamond Bar are solid white lines that turn into dotted lines prior to an intersection indica
