Name of Bio-monitor:Karly Moore Location:Diamond Bar Location Description:Coastal Sage Scrub and Coast Live Oak Woodland, behind residential area Map # (If applicable):N/A Bio-monitoring Activity Start Time:07:15 End Time:09:25 Bio-monitoring Notes: ●The biologist surveyed the site for new vegetation disturbance, construction progress, and compliance with permit requirements. ○New vegetation disturbance occurred at the south end of the trail where they installed a new section of v swale (~72 ft.) last week (Figure 7). ○Gabion cages are filled with rock (Figures 2, 3 and 4). ○Today the crew was working on installing the wood steps at the far south end of the trail (Figure 8 and 9). ●The cherry picker and skid steer were parked in the staging area. A drip pan was under the skid steer. ●No further work appears to have occurred with the BMPs. ●All biological resources were monitored and no adverse impacts occurred. Endemic Environmental Services Biological Resource Findings Were there any listed species observed on or near site?Yes If yes, then: Was listed species impacted due to work?No Species Common/ Scientific Name: California gnatcatcher (Polioptila californica californica) Time of Observed Listed Species:07:30 GPS Location of Listed Species (if applicable):34.00294; -117.79920 Description of Listed Location:California sagebrush along the trail. Bio-monitor Notes: During the weekly site visit a pair of non-breeding California gnatcatchers were observed moving through the California sagebrush below the lions gabion wall (site 2), where the trail is closed permanently. No construction was occurring at the time of the observation. Bio-monitor Notes: Endemic Environmental Services Vegetation Impact Section Was vegetation impacted by project work activity?Yes If yes, then: Habitat Type:California sagebrush Type of Vegetation Impacted:California sagebrush What type of impact occurred?Removal Square Footage of Impacted Area:190 sq ft Bio-monitor Notes:Last week a section of v swale was installed and a section of California sagebrush was removed on the downslope side of the trail for the v swale. Endemic Environmental Services Non-Listed Species Section Were there any non-listed species observed?Yes If yes, then: Species Common/ Scientific Name: Nuttall’s woodpecker (Dryobates nuttalli), Bushtit (Psaltriparus minimus), Northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos), American robin (Turdus migratorius), Acorn woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus), House finch (Haemorhous mexicanus),California towhee (Melozone crissalis), California scrub-jay (Aphelocoma californica),Mourning dove (Zenaida macroura), American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos), Allen’s hummingbird (Selasphorus sasin), Anna’s hummingbird (Calypte anna), Ruby-crowned kinglet (Corthylio calendula), White-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys),California towhee (Melozone crissalis) Bio-monitor Notes: Today was a brief site check. The biologist reminded the crew about picking up trash and needing drip pans. The biologist inquired about additional BMPs. The biologist reminded them to better secure the plastic coverings on the stockpiles. In the staging area there remains preformed concrete v swales, gabion cages, wood for the steps, rock and the portolet was moved to this location. The rock that had been staged near the SCE tower was gone (Figure 10). The installation of rock into the gabion cages has been completed. However, they still need to backfill behind the cages. The plastic covering the stockpiles remains poorly secured and no additional BMPs have been put into place. Some new vegetation was removed when they installed a 72 ft section of v swale at the south end of the trail. The vegetation removal involved coastal sage scrub plants such as California buckwheat and California sagebrush. Today the crew worked on installing wood stairs at the very south end of the trail next to the oak trees. The biologist reminded them to limit the spoils going under the oak trees. They used the mini excavator with the small bucket for digging. Additional equipment included a shovel, level, portable generator, power tools, and mallet.
