The canyon bottoms were cleaned of loose soils and/or alluvium as determined in the field during excavation by the supervising soils engineer. The depths of removal to firm natural ground varied from three to ten feet. Subdrains consisting of six inch diameter, perforated corrugated aluminum pipe embedded in gravel were placed as shown on the attached grading plans. METHOD OF FILL PLACEMENT Fill soils were placed in lifts of six to eight inches in thick- ness, watered as necessary to approximate optimum moisture con- tent, aria compacted to a minimum relative compaction of 90 percent of the laboratory standard. Robert Stone & Associates E. L. Pearson and Associates 1-68-301-10 November 5, 1970 Page 3 Fill slopes were compacted by back rolling, at intervals of four feet in vertical height, with a sheepsfoot'roller. When. the slope reached design height, the entire face was rolled with overlapping passes of a sheepsfoot roller. Slope surfaces were finished under supervision by one of the following methods: grid rolling, track rolling or trimming to firm compacted soils. EQUIPMENT Equipment used in placing the fill consisted of bulldozers, scrapers, sheepsfoot rollers and water trucks. COMPACTION TESTING AND DEPTH OF FILL Compaction test locations are shown on the attached As -Built 0 Grading Plans prepared by E. L. Pearson and Associates. Compac- tion tests were made in eacli two feet of fill and the test results are shown in Table I. Compaction tests were made accord- ing to ASTM:D-1556-58T. The areas occupied by compacted fill are shown on the attached grading plans. The maximum depth of compacted fill covered by this report is about 75 feet. COMPACTED FILL BUTTRESSES AND SHEAR KEYS Compacted fill buttresses were emplaced on the following Lots: 11, 12, 15-18, 44, 70-74 and 76-80. Shear keys were emplaced on the following Lots: 47-55, 58-69 and 170-176. RESTRICTED USE AREAS Restricted use areas occur on the following Lots: 15-17, 35-43, 46-55, 58-69 and 168-181. FIPAL 6'ci- Robert Stone & Associates 1-68-301-10 E. L. These tests measurae the verti- o relative expansion of soil specimens remolded tcallinearexpanlaboratorystandard. The spec.1- compaction of go percent of the ture content. The specimens mens are remolded at optimum mois hours. They are then placed inareallowedtoair-dry for 24 the testing devices and water is added to simulate a ssaturated condition. The specimens are placed under a surcharg 60 lb/sq ft and in accordance With the County of Los Angeles standards. The percent swell is then measured when expansion ceases, normally in 24 hours. The results of the expansion tests are as follows: Sample No. A -Sandy Clay B -Sandstone C-Siltstone D -Sandy Clay E -Clayey Sand F -Sandy Clay Percent Swell Undgr 60 psf Load) 9.50 2.50 4.90 10.00 1.60 4.85 various soil types is given in A lot by lot breadkown of the Table II. GENERAL FOUNDATION RECOMMENDATIONS A lot by lot analysis of the tract has been made with reference to foundation design. The analysis included a breakdown into various categories by interrelating the type of earth materials and their expansion qualities, and the angle of slopes on the lots. The analysis was applied to what appears to be the most roba? Ic building area on each lot. The restilts, of the ara,11 are presented in Table II. Where more than one type'of foundation category is shown in Table II, the building official can determine the applicable design criteria based on the location of the structures. On lots where cuts are proposed in excess of three feet in vertical height or where cuts are proposed (any height) that would undercut a dip slope or bedding plane inclination as shown on the geologic map, a grading plan review by an engineering geologist is recommended. 2. If additional grading is proposed on any lot where stabiliza- tion installation exists a grading plan review by a soils engineer and engineering geologist is recommonded. 3. Wherever proposed grading (primarily filling) would increase driving forces above an existing stabilization device (even if on another lot) a grading plan review by a soils engineer and engineering gcclogist is recommvn3ei. 4. When a grading permit is required, reconmiendations concerning additional proposed grading such as fill placement, cleanouts, cut orientation and slope construction should be made when the proposed grading is known. 5. In all other cases Los Angeles County requirements concerning issuance of grading permits should apply. Very truly yours, ROBERT STONE & ASSOCIATES, INC.
