INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: 2.1 MARCH RECREATION PROGRAM - RS/Murphey 2.2 MARCH 2019 MAINTENANCE REPORT- FAMT/Williams C/Liang asked if there was any damage to any of the parks and whether Sycamore Canyon Park suffered additional damage. FAMT/Williams responded that Sycamore Canyon Park held up well for the amount of rain it experienced. While there was some erosion, it was to be expected. The trails took the biggest hit where there was a decent amount of erosion. Staff has assessed the damage and remediation work will begin next week and likely continue for the next three or four weeks as crews are sent to repair the damage throughout the City. C/Salo said he visited Heritage Park a few weeks ago and noticed one of the drinking fountains near the basketball court was clogged. He also asked that staff check out the Tic -Tac -Toe wheels that are on the playground because the wheels seem to be stiff and he is not sure the kids can actually rotate it to play. FAMT/Williams said that staff would look into both items. 3. OLD BUSINESS: None 4. NEW BUSINESS: None MARCH 28, 2019 5. ANNOUNCEMENTS: PAGE 3 P&R COMMISSION VC/Hsieh said she was happy to be back with the Commission and be with her colleagues. She will be coming to the meetings and do all she can to help this City that she loves. Thanks to everyone. C/Sulakhe welcomed C/Hsieh back to the Commission and was glad to see her feeling better. She thanked staff for managing such a large basketball championship crowd this evening. It is a great event for the City, the parents and the kids. She appreciates all of the work staff continues to do. She welcomed new Chair/Orona. C/Liang took his weekend walk at Maple Hill Park and Heritage Park. The parks are well maintained and he can tell that staff is really dedicated to doing a great job. He appreciates staff's hard work. C/Salo congratulated Chair/Orona. He was glad to see all of the Commissioners present this evening. He is getting excited for the City Birthday Celebration which appears to be well organized and he is glad to be a part of it. Chair/Orona echoed his colleague's statements. It is very good to have VC/Hsieh back on the Commission and it is nice to see every Commissioner present. He is very excited for the City's spring and summer seasons events. He remembers attending last year's City Birthday party and going to all of the summer events which were a lot of fun. It is his favorite time to be a Commissioner and to be serving this City. He thanked staff for the work they do and for the work that they have ahead of them. The Summer Recreation Guide was mailed to residents the first week of April and is also available on the City's website. Recreation Software Update Staff attended a RecTrac Users Group meeting in the City of 1301dwin Park on March 14. Topics covered included an overview of the software, software updates and "Did You Know's", and an open Q&A. Staff have also been busy implementing the email marketing capabilities of the new system by sending out program and event reminders. Contract Classes Winter/Spring Session March marked the midway point of the Winter/Spring session with 530 students enrolled in 223 available classes this season. Raptor Water Polo Academy approached the Recreation Department with a last minute addition for the season. The water polo program has nine enrolled and began class on March 18. Staff is excited for this aquatics program and hope to build this into multiple programs in the future. Winter/Spring Session The Summer session will begin on May 18 and will run through August 23. The Summer Recreation Guide has been mailed to residents and is available online. Registration opened April 1. New classes this season include Fondant, Cookie, and Cupcake decorating workshops, Anime Drawing Camp, and Splash Ball. Senior Programs Senior Classes Mt. San Antonio College partners with the City of Diamond Bar to offer 14 free classes to seniors at the Diamond Bar Center, Heritage Park, and Pantera Activity Room. The classes vary from exercise to fine arts. Most of these classes are filled to capacity. The Spring session began on February 25 and will concluded June 14. Senior Seminars 3/16 Travel Showcase - 3 participants 3/20 Legal Seminar- 10 participants Senior Activities and Services • Mahjong every Wednesday- 43 per session on average • Bingo every Tuesday and Friday- 180 per session on average • AARP Taxes - 40 seniors received free tax aide in the month of March • Complimentary Legal Services 1 st Wednesday of each month - 5 appointments were booked for March Senior Special Events March 13, 2019 - Mardi Gras Dance Mardi Gras was the theme for March's dance at the Diamond Bar Center. The 123 seniors in attendance wore festive masks and enjoyed a BBQ feast prepared by Tiscareno's Catering. DJ Keith Johnson provided a delightful mix of music keeping the seniors on their feet all evening long. The event concluded with everyone's favorite: raffle prizes! Adult Excursions March 16, 2019 - Getty Villa & Picnic Lunch There were 45 participants for the Getty Villa Saturday, March 16. Upon arrival everyone enjoyed a casual lunch as they relaxed in the surrounding picnic area at the Villa. The rest of the afternoon was spent perusing the museum, where there are 23 permanent galleries and 5 changing galleries. Senior Excursions March 25, 2019 - Griffith Observatory A bus of 45 seniors went to Griffith Observatory on Thursday, March 25. They started their 2.1 day with lunch in Glendale at Vegas Seafood Buffet. After lunch they drove up tothe Griffith Observatory where the afternoon was theirs to enjoy! There were 13 participants enrolled in the three to four year old class offered Tuesday and Thursday, and 19 participants enrolled in the four to five year old class offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The spring session started on March 25. There are 14 participants enrolled in the three to four year old class offered Tuesday & Thursday, and 10 participants enrolled in the four to five year old class offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The spring session will run for 11 weeks and conclude on May 31. There will be no class on May 27 due to the Memorial Day holiday. DB 4Youth During the month of March, DB 4Youth assisted with several City programs and events and also helped the Diamond Bar Community Foundation. On Sunday, March 10 DB 4Youth members volunteered at the Foundation's 5K Run/Walk. A total of four members assisted the foundation during their event and supervised water stations to ensure runners stayed hydrated. On Saturday, March 16, five DB 4Youth members assisted with the Healthy Diamond Bar- Trail Hike Day, assisting with check-in, t -shirt distribution, and trail trash pick-up. Wednesday, March 20, Tech Time was offered for the fourth time. Five volunteers assisted eight seniors with technology questions about personal devices such as cell phones and tablets. On Tuesday, March 26, DB 4Youth held their regular monthly meeting at the Diamond Bar Center with 30 members in attendance. The agenda included a recap on DBCF 5K Run/Walk, Tech Time, Trail Hike Day and Youth Basketball. The meeting also covered information on April volunteer opportunities such as 30th City Birthday Party, Connect with Rec Open House on April 20, and Tech Time on March 24. Officers wrapped up the meeting with candidate speeches for 2019-2020 board member election and members voted at the end of the meeting. Lastly, a total of six DB 4Youth members were recognized at the Parks and Recreation Commissioner meeting on Thursday, March 28 for completing 20 hours in assisting with the City's Youth Basketball program. Volunteens The Volunteen program opened the online application process on February 4, through the City's website. Interested applicants may apply online from now until April 21. Teens will find themselves assisting the Parks & Recreation Department with summer programs such as Tiny Tots, Summer Day Camp, Concerts and Movies in the Park, and senior programing. This program is driven for teens ages 13-17 that are looking for leadership opportunities and work experience. At the end of the program, teens will receive a certificate with the total hours volunteered. Currently, a total of 40 applications have been received to participate in the program. Youth and Adult Sports Youth Basketball Youth Basketball wrapped up its last game on Saturday March 9. This season offered its participants nine weeks of practices and eight weeks of games that started January 19. The program was divided into five divisions 4-5, 6-7, 8-9 10-11 and 12-13 years old. The majority of the games took place at Chaparral Middle School, which provided space for the 4-5, 6-7, and 12-13 year olds divisions. Mt. Calvary Lutheran held the 8-9 division and South Pointe Middle School housed the 10-11 year old divisions. Participation medals were available for pick up during the last two weeks of the season. In addition, on the last day of games staff awarded a sportsmanship winner to one team in every division. Awards were presented during the March Parks and Recreation Commission meeting. Youth Soccer Youth Soccer is an eight-week program that offers children ages 3-8 an opportunity to play this fun, fast -paced sport in an instructional and recreational atmosphere. This program is perfect for beginning and young players. Games are played in the Mt. Calvary Lutheran School gymnasium on Saturdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., beginning on March 30 and concluding on May 25. The fee to participate for residents is $99 per participant and $104 for non- residents. The fee includes eight games, a team jersey, and a participation medal. The program has 1 1 1 participants registered. Table Tennis The Table Tennis program continues play at Heritage Park on Thursdays 6-9:30 p.m. (average of six participants) and Sunday 5-8 p.m. (average of five participants) evenings. This free drop in program offers users of all ages an opportunity to play on three table tennis tables, all they have to do is bring their paddle and table tennis balls to participate. Adult Co -Ed Volleyball The winter/spring season for adult volleyball began Monday, February 4 and will conclude on April 22. All games are played at South Pointe Middle School from 7-9pm every Monday night. This is a great way for players to improve their skills in a recreational setting. This drop-in program is designed for players who want to get on the court and play. There are no officials, no strict rules, and teams are formed informally as players arrive. Currently, adult volleyball has 17 participants who are registered in the program.
